The land that would become Torrance was originally part of Rancho San Pedro, a sprawling Spanish land grant of over 75,000 acres given to soldier Juan José Domínguez in 1784. The modern city of Torrance was born from vision and careful planning. In the early 1900s, real estate developer Jared Sidney Torrance saw the potential for creating a unique mixed industrial and residential community south of Los Angeles. He and fellow investors purchased part of the old Spanish land grant and commissioned Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., a renowned landscape architect, to design what would become one of California’s first master-planned communities. The town was founded in October 1912 and formally incorporated in May 1921.
Today’s Old Torrance neighborhood, featuring historic streets like Gramercy and Andreo Avenues, still showcases some of the city’s original character.
