As Los Angeles County grew rapidly after World War II, returning veterans and new families needing affordable housing helped transform Lawndale into a classic postwar bedroom community.
By the late 1950s, community leaders worried that Lawndale would simply be absorbed by its larger neighbors through annexation. On December 28, 1959, residents voted to incorporate, giving Lawndale its own city government and setting the stage for the community it is today.
Today, Lawndale is a close-knit, diverse city in the heart of the South Bay, known for its strong sense of community and easy access to the rest of Los Angeles County. Families are drawn to the area’s manageable size, walkable neighborhoods, and proximity to major employment hubs in nearby Torrance, Hawthorne, and El Segundo.
Students in Lawndale attend schools within the Lawndale Elementary School District and the Centinela Valley Union High School District, including Leuzinger High School, a longstanding neighborhood landmark.
